Nevada Assembly Elections 2026: A New Generation of Progressive Candidates Enters the Political Arena

From Zohran Mamdani's historic victory in New York City to grassroots campaigns in Nevada, progressive candidates are challenging traditional political approaches and bringing renewed attention to affordability, workers' rights, housing, and representation.

LAS VEGAS, NV — As Nevada prepares for the November 3 midterm elections, several State Assembly races are attracting attention for reasons that extend beyond traditional party politics. A new generation of progressive candidates, including some affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is seeking to bring different perspectives to Carson City.

Across the country, grassroots campaigns have demonstrated how community organizing, volunteer participation, and a focus on everyday economic concerns can shape elections.

One of the most prominent examples is New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The Mamdani Effect: From State Assembly to City Hall

When Zohran Mamdani launched his campaign for New York City mayor, he was a relatively little-known state assemblymember facing established political figures.

His campaign emphasized affordable housing, public transportation, childcare, and the rising cost of living. Rather than relying solely on conventional political campaigning, Mamdani built an extensive grassroots operation that reportedly mobilized more than 100,000 volunteers.

In November 2025, Mamdani won the mayoral election with approximately 50.8% of the vote, becoming New York City's first Muslim mayor. His victory drew national attention to democratic socialism, younger voters, and the role of volunteer-driven campaigns

His election also raised an important question: Could similar grassroots organizing influence state and local elections elsewhere?

In Nevada, that question is particularly relevant as candidates with progressive platforms compete for seats in the State Assembly.

Women Bringing New Perspectives to Nevada's Assembly

Among the candidates seeking their first terms in the Nevada Assembly are Alexis Esparza, Shenea Booth, Eileen Eady, and Kamilah Bywaters.

Their backgrounds differ, and they do not necessarily share the same ideological identity. However, their campaigns have attracted support from labor unions, education advocates, women's political organizations, and progressive groups.

Nevada's Progressive Assembly Candidates to Watch

Eileen Eady — District 4

Democrat | Opponent: Joe Ludwig (R)

A small-business owner and outreach consultant who has earned endorsements from AFSCME, AFL-CIO, Teamsters, and the Nevada State Education Association. Her campaign brings experience in community outreach and business

Vinny Spotleson — Assembly District 41

Democrat | Opponent: Kelly Chapman (R)

A high school social studies teacher and environmental advocate, Spotleson is campaigning on affordability, workers' rights, and reducing corporate influence in politics. He is a DSA member but does not identify as a socialist, and has emphasized policy over political labels. His opponent, Kelly Chapman, emphasizes public safety, retail theft enforcement, and affordability

Alex Pereszlenyi — Assembly District 29

Democrat | Opponent: Joe Ludwig (R)

A software developer and data analyst from Henderson, Pereszlenyi is campaigning on housing affordability, stronger public education funding, corporate accountability, and higher taxes on wealthy individuals. He is a Las Vegas DSA member but did not seek its endorsement. Republican Joe Ludwig advocates limited government, questions the effectiveness of additional education spending, and opposes rent control.

Jon Penn Junejo — Assembly District 36

Democrat | Opponent: Gregory Hafen (R)

Dr. Junejo is another candidate receiving support from Run for Something, an organization that recruits and supports younger, grassroots-oriented candidates. He is challenging Republican incumbent Gregory Hafen. His candidacy adds to the range of political backgrounds represented in Nevada's legislative contests, although a DSA affiliation has not been established.

Kamilah Bywaters — District 2

Democrat | Opponent: Drew Teitelbaum(R)

A special education professional and advocate for educational equity. She has endorsements from the Nevada State Education Association, AFL-CIO, and EMILY's List. Her background offers a perspective on education and representation

Shenea Booth — Assembly District 22

Democrat | Opponent: Melissa Hardy (R)

A newcomer challenging Republican incumbent Melissa Hardy. Booth has endorsements from PLAN, AFL-CIO, Culinary Union, Laborers, and Teamsters. Her candidacy offers a perspective on labor issues and grassroots political participation.

A Changing Political Conversation

The emergence of progressive candidates does not mean Nevada voters agree on every policy proposal.

Supporters of progressive economic policies argue that stronger worker protections, housing regulations, and corporate accountability are needed to address inequality. Critics raise concerns about taxation, government spending, regulatory burdens, and the potential consequences of rent controls.

These disagreements are especially visible in Assembly Districts 29 and 41, where candidates offer contrasting approaches to affordability and the role of government.

What makes the 2026 elections noteworthy is the growing attention to grassroots organizing and candidates who have backgrounds in education, technology, environmental advocacy, and community service.

Mamdani's mayoral victory illustrated how an extensive volunteer operation and a clearly defined economic message could mobilize voters. Whether similar organizing methods will produce lasting political changes in Nevada remains an open question.

November 3: More Than Just a Midterm Election

Nevada's Assembly elections will help determine which legislative priorities receive attention during the 2027 legislative session.

For voters, the important questions go beyond party affiliation or whether a candidate identifies as progressive, moderate, conservative, or democratic socialist.

What legislation will candidates introduce? How do they intend to address housing costs, education, and healthcare? Who funds their campaigns? And how will they represent constituents whose views differ from their own?

The emergence of women candidates with backgrounds in organized labor, education, community outreach, and business offers voters additional perspectives to consider.

At the same time, legislative experience, policy knowledge, fiscal responsibility, and the ability to work with other lawmakers remain important considerations.

Mamdani's victory in New York demonstrated the potential of grassroots electoral organizing. Nevada's Assembly races provide another opportunity to examine how candidates communicate with voters, build community relationships, and propose solutions to public concerns.

As November 3 approaches, Nevada voters have an opportunity to examine those questions and determine what kind of representation they want in Carson City.
